10 Ways to Conserve Energy in your Apartment

Posted On Apr 3, 2024

At Kelson Group, beyond our commitment to providing quality apartments that help you live better, we strive to make a positive impact on the environment. As part of the Certified Rental Building™ (CRB) Program, we are dedicated to enhancing energy efficiency across our properties, ensuring a sustainable future for our residents and our planet. With over 40 certified buildings across Western Canada, we’re proud to lead the change towards a greener tomorrow.

As we approach Earth Day, it’s a crucial time to reflect on our energy consumption habits. While staying cool during these upcoming warmer months is essential, it’s equally important to be mindful of our environmental footprint and reduce our waste as much as possible.

Here are 10 simple yet impactful tips from the CRB that you can implement to conserve energy:

  1. Mindful lighting: Turn off lights when not in use, mastering the 'task lighting' technique to minimize energy waste.

  1. Upgrade to energy-efficient lighting: Replace incandescent lamps with compact fluorescent or LED lights, which consume less energy and emit less heat.

  1. Harness natural light: Keep blinds closed during the hottest parts of the day to block out heat and reduce the need for artificial lighting or even an air conditioner.

  1. Choose fans over air conditioners: Whenever possible, choose fans unless an air conditioner is needed for medical purposes or there is an extreme heat wave.

  1. Power down unused electronics: Turn off computers, printers, or any other electronics when not in use to reduce standby power consumption.

  1. Turn off your fan or air conditioner: Just as turning off your computer can help you save some energy, turn off your fan or air conditioner when your apartment is empty, even if it is for a few hours.

  1. Seal out hot air: Keep windows closed when your air conditioner is being used to prevent warm air from infiltrating your space and using more energy as a result.

  1. Rethink thawing methods: To defrost frozen food, use the refrigerator instead of the microwave to save energy.

  1. Hand-wash your dishes: Use the dishwasher for full loads only, and whenever possible, hand-wash your dishes to conserve water and energy.

  1. Maximize laundry efficiency: Wait until you have a full load of dirty clothes before running the washing machine and try using cold water.

At Kelson Group, we’re committed to leading by example, and we’ve started by installing solar panels in two of our Kamloops properties, Valleyview Manor and Columbia Manor. By harnessing the sun’s power, we’re reducing energy costs and significantly reducing our carbon footprint.

By implementing these energy-saving tips and embracing sustainable initiatives like solar panels, we can all play a part in building a brighter, more sustainable future for generations to come. Together, let’s celebrate this Earth Day by making conscious choices that benefit our communities and our environment.
